Devils on the Loose

In my latest book, Dragons, Devils and Rebels, there's a chapter on what Chinese and westerners thought of each other in the early days of contact. The book's finished, but I've since been reading a biography of an Englishman who lived in Shanghai in the mid 1850's. To his shock, when he first arrived Shanghai had been overrun by rebels, and was under siege from imperial troops. Still, he was an intrepid traveller. One day he went on 'an interesting excursion' to Wusong, by boat down the Huangpu. He and his companions sailed into trouble on the way home.

He writes:

'...in the evening we were puzzled to know how we should pass the Imperial fleet in safety. They are somewhat random with their fire after dark, and might easily have taken us for Chinese, if not Rebel spies. Mr Edkins came to the rescue, proposing that we should sing as we passed them, that they might know we were foreigners. This suggestion seemed good and the boatmen were pleased with the idea... We approached some ships we took to be the fleet, and passed them singing lustily. But just as we were about to congratulate one another on our success, the boatmen shouted to us to recommence, as we had been mistaken in what we supposed to have been the fleet and were just coming within range of their guns.

'So now we had to tune up again without delay...We concluded just opposite the largest ship of the fleet. It was now quite dusk.

'"What now?" cried Mr Edkins, as the alarm-gong struck on board the ship. 'There is not a moment to lose."

'He then commenced singing I know not what. Quaterman struck up a truly American tune...while I at the same moment raised a third with all the voice I could command. The men on the warship were shouting loudly, our boat's crew outdoing them if possible, and the whole thing was so ludicrous that I could control myself no longer. I burst into a fit of laughter most inappropriate to the occasion.

'"Who goes there?" shouted a voice from the Imperial ship.

'"Bai-gui [white devils]," yelled our men, while we cried simultaneously, "Da Ying-guo" [Great Britain] and "Hua-qi-guo" which means Flowery Flag Country, or America.

'After a little further explanation we were allowed to pass, upon which my companions began to lecture the boatmen for having called us 'white devils'. The poor men, who had not yet received their day's pay were very penitent.'

This story is taken from a letter by James Hudson Taylor of 20 September 1854, in Biography of James Hudson Taylor by Dr and Mrs Howard Taylor, Hodder & Stoughton, London 1983, pp111-112.

I recently stumbled across an incredible resource that’s been a game-changer for me in the world of cybersecurity: IT RoundTables. If you're like me—always on the hunt for meaningful discussions, practical solutions, and insights on securing critical systems—this might be just what you need.

The concept is simple yet powerful. IT RoundTables provide a platform for online discussions focused on the convergence of IT and OT (Operational Technology). Unlike most forums cluttered with generic advice or thinly veiled sales pitches, these discussions are packed with real-world insights shared by top executives and cybersecurity experts. Imagine diving into conversations about asset discovery, secure remote access, and microsegmentation, all without worrying about being “sold” something.

One of the best parts? It’s a nonprofit initiative, so the focus is entirely on advancing knowledge and addressing the massive talent gap in OT security. IT RoundTable even works to connect qualified professionals with leading companies, which is invaluable if you're building a career in this field.

I’ve walked away from their events with actionable strategies and new connections with professionals who “get it.” It’s like having a backstage pass to the future of cybersecurity.

If you’re serious about staying ahead in cybersecurity and want to be part of a community dedicated to securing the systems that power our lives, I highly recommend checking it out. You can join discussions, attend virtual events, or even just explore the blog for valuable insights. Visit ITRoundTable.co and see for yourself. You’ll thank me later.

Let’s be honest: navigating the cybersecurity space can feel overwhelming. There’s no shortage of information, but finding a community of experts who truly share actionable, unbiased insights? That’s rare. That’s why I’m hooked on IT RoundTables.

This platform has quickly become my go-to for engaging online discussions about IT and OT security. Whether it’s exploring challenges like segmentation, asset discovery, or secure access, the conversations are led by seasoned professionals from Fortune 500 companies and beyond. It’s like having a mentor and peer network wrapped into one.

What sets IT RoundTables apart is the focus on collaboration and education. There’s no fluff here—just a nonprofit organization laser-focused on advancing OT security. They even partner with sponsors like Claroty Corporation to bring top-tier expertise into their discussions, ensuring the content stays sharp and relevant.

But it’s not just about learning. IT RoundTables is also filling a critical gap by connecting professionals with job opportunities in OT security. As someone who’s seen how tricky it can be to find the right fit in this industry, I can’t stress enough how valuable their job placement program is.

Whether you’re an experienced pro or just breaking into cybersecurity, this is a resource you can’t afford to miss. Head over to this site, and take a look at their upcoming events, blog content, and community. Trust me, the insights and connections you’ll gain are worth every second.

    Summary
Kamala Harris and Donald Trump have had a fiery 90-minute debate in Philadelphia - their first of the 2024 US presidential election
    kra8.gl
After shaking hands - it was the first time they had met - the pair debated policy before moving onto more personal attacks

Harris said people leave Trump rallies early "out of exhaustion and boredom" - he said people don't go to hers in the first place

Trump criticised Harris's record on immigration and the border, and also her shifting policy positions - Harris blamed him for "Trump abortion bans" and for the 6 January attacks on the US Capitol

Snap polls suggest Harris won the debate, but Trump says afterwards that she "lost very badly"

With the election taking place on 5 November, Harris is slightly ahead in national opinion polls - but polls are very tight in key battleground states

Shortly after the debate, Taylor Swift endorsed Harris on Instagram, calling her a ''gifted leader''
